Jeremiah Atwater

Atwater Commons takes its name from Jeremiah Atwater, Middlebury's first president, who led the College between the years 1800 and 1809. Jeremiah (1773-1858) became principal of the Addison County Grammar School in 1799 and a year later, when the school became Middlebury College, he assumed the role of its first president.


Past Atwater Commons Heads include Brett Millier and Karl Lindholm, and Emmie and Stephen Donadio.

Jeremiah the Frog

Atwater's mascot is the frog.  Frogs usually hop around from one place to another due to their ability to thrive in various locations.  The frog represents Atwater students' curiosity about new places and interests.  The color for Atwater Commons is Green.

Atwater's Traditions

Atwater hosts many family style dinners in the Atwater dining Hall.  Every December, Atwater hosts a Holly Ball. An annual Red Cross blood drive is also hosted by Atwater Commons.
