COVID-19: Essential Information

By choosing to use 100 percent recycled paper and green cleaning products, Middlebury seeks to make sustainable decisions on behalf of our entire community.

Recycled Paper

Industrialized nations consume as much as 87 percent of the world’s printing and writing papers. An increase in recycled content reduces consumption of trees, water, and electricity by 300 percent.

In keeping with its leadership in sustainability, Middlebury uses 100 percent recycled-content, process chlorine free (PCF) paper in all on-campus printers and copiers, as well as for many outsourced publications. Many campus publications are printed on 100 percent postconsumer waste, process chlorine free (PCW-PCF) paper that is produced in a facility powered with renewable wind energy.

Additionally Middlebury’s paper policy encourages the use of paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a highly respected, rigorous assurance that sustainable practices are used in the production of paper products.

Green Cleaning

At Middlebury, custodial services has found many green alternatives to standard cleaning chemicals, and they continue to look for new ways to reduce the reliance on harmful chemicals and replace them with high-performing, eco-friendly alternatives.

  • Middlebury now uses the Betco Green Earth product line for much of its cleaning needs, including an all-purpose cleaner, a peroxide cleaner for bathrooms, window cleaner, disinfectants, and more.
  • Microfiber cloths capture dirt and bacteria at a higher rate and require fewer cleaning chemicals compared to regular cleaning cloths.
  • The central vac systems in use in most of the large buildings at Middlebury are much healthier for users and building occupants because they vent the dust and dirt away from the living/working areas. They also use reusable filters and drums, so no disposable vacuum bags are needed.
  • We use an environmentally friendly carpet cleaner and are researching greener floor strippers and finishers.
  • Steam cleaning is used for some carpet and upholstery shampooing, for cleaning some metals, and on ceramic tile flooring, saving time and use of chemicals.
  • For odor elimination, Middlebury uses ozone machines to remove odors from painting, cigarette smoke, and carpet installations, avoiding the need for chemical odor removers.
