Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a discipline directed toward managing risks across the institution. The ERM office views “risk” as any issue that impacts the organization’s ability to meet its objectives, and we see “risk” as both an adverse impact and as an opportunity.

Middlebury’s ERM program is spearheaded by the chief risk officer and engages key senior leaders and the Board of Trustees to identify and rank institution-wide risk. However, it is important to note that successful risk management at Middlebury also includes support at the departmental level, where risk is managed on a day-to-day basis. For this reason, department managers play a critical role in Enterprise Risk Management.
