The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs Global Fellows program presents Toby Fenwick ’95 and his talk “Are Elections in Post-Conflict States Doing More Harm Than Good?”

Since the end of the Cold War, there has been a consensus that democracy – and in particular, various flavours of liberal democracy on western models – is the best form of government, and elections have been proactively used in post-conflict states as an integral part of managing and sustaining the peace-building process. However, as has been seen in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Sudans, elections alone do not ensure stable democratic orders. Drawing on Victoria Stewart-Jolley’s forthcoming book and his own governmental and diplomatic experience, Toby Fenwick will consider how we can improve the outcomes from democratisation processes in post-conflict states.
