Cosplay for Science - Combining Science and Storytelling

From the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park to the tauntauns in a galaxy far, far away, science has inspired so much in the worlds of fiction and yet many don’t even realize it! Enter the Cosplay for Science Initiative, an innovative science education group that combines cosplay, storytelling, and pop culture to create immersive learning experiences and help audiences personally connect to their science in their everyday lives. In this presentation, discover the origin story of the Initiative and learn about their methods to connect the worlds of fiction to ours.

Gabriel Philip Santos, Director of Education, Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, CoFounder, Cosplay for Science Initiative

Gabriel Santos received his B.Sc. in biology at University of California-Irvine, and his M.Sc. in geology at California State University-Fullerton. His research interests focus on the Eocene vertebrate fauna of Southern California and the paleobiology of marine mammals, particularly in the extinct hippo-like desmostylians. He joined the Alf Museum in 2015. As Director of Visitor Engagement and Education, he manages the museum’s outreach and education programs, such as Discovery Days , Fossil Friday Chats, and the ACCESS Paleo SoCal Internship. Gabriel was selected as a 2021 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.
