Careers in Law and Government: A Panel Discussion with Middlebury Alumni

Students will have an opportunity to hear from and ask questions of four alumni who have pursued careers in law.
Karen Massey ‘74 is a graduate of Yale Law School. Her diverse experience includes legal positions with the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Maine Land and Water Resources Council, the Marine Law Institute, and education at several levels.
Jeff Thaler ‘77, a graduate of Yale Law School, teaches energy law at the University of Maine teaches land use, regulatory and energy law courses and skills at Maine Law School in Portland, Maine. He was previously Partner at Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson in Portland, where his litigation practice spanned environmental, land use, and energy law at all regulatory levels, as well as trial work in federal and state courts. His prior experience included a clerkship for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and work as a Public Defender for the Legal Aid Society in New York City.
Reid M. Figel ‘78, a graduate of NYU School of Law, is a partner at Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evan & Figel in Washington, DC. Mr. Figel represents corporations, financial institutions, and individuals in federal and state criminal and regulatory matters, and in complex financial litigation. He was previously Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He clerked for Judge George C. Pratt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Thomas J. Knox ‘84, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, is a partner at Morrison Foerster in Washington, DC. He is global Co-Chair of the firm’s Corporate Department and advises clients on corporate, financing, technology transactions and sourcing matters, serving as a strategic advisor to companies in the technology, media, life sciences, transportation, manufacturing and government services sectors, and to investors in such companies.
