Kemi Fuentes-George, Department of Political Science, “Local Culture, International Treaties: The Effect of Norms on Global Environmental Governance”
While international environmental treaties are negotiated by states, they have to be interpreted and implemented at the local level by a diverse group of actors, including governmental agencies and local communities. When this happens, local ideas can shape how global treaties function. This talk uses recent research to show how local historical myths and ideas about justice shape the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
