“Humanities in Action: Case Studies from Middlebury’s Public Humanities Labs Initiative”

In this Zoom talk, faculty directing and participating in the Public Humanities Labs (PHL) Initiative, sponsored by the Axinn Center for the Humanities, will discuss the nature of PHL courses, focusing in particular on the hands-on/experiential and public-facing components that are the distinctive features of these classes. Faculty will share pedagogical approaches, varied material and/or digital tools, engagement with local community partners and/or national experts, and their creation of public-facing forums or products that allow students to disseminate what they learned on a broader level. The PHL Initiative at Middlebury College is currently funded with a grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, and by the Middlebury College Fund For Innovation (FFI) and the Axinn Center for the Humanities. The Initiative also relies on partnerships with different campus interlocutors, including the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), the Office of Digital Learning & Inquiry (DLINQ), midd.data, and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTLR), among others.
