John McLeod, Department of History of Art and Architecture, will give a talk as part of the 2019-20 Carol Rifelj Faculty Lecture Series.

“Designing for Real: Community-based Experiential Learning Through a Collaboration of Architectural Studies and Habitat for Humanity”

A maddening number of Vermonters live in unsuitable, unaffordable housing, and have little chance of owning a home through conventional means. But Middlebury students have been working to do something about that, one house at a time. Working with local professionals and volunteers through a year-long sequence of architecture courses, the students plan, budget, design, and permit the houses that Habitat for Humanity is building in Addison County. This talk will present the origins, process, challenges, and outcomes of this unique opportunity for hands-on learning and real-world impact.

Refreshments will be served.
