Associate Professor Rebecca Kneale Gould of the Program in Environmental Studies will give this week’s Carol Rifelj lecture.

“Rethinking Thoreau: Race, Religion and Renewal.”

In Thoreau’s 200th birthday year, scholars and enthusiasts are asking what Thoreau’s life, works and legacy might mean to us today.  My own contribution to this conversation focuses on the teaching of Thoreau in the context of emerging discussions of race and privilege both within and outside of the academy. Should we still be reading, teaching and talking about Thoreau and, if so, how do we do it?
