Connecting Service & Social Justice
Join facilitators from BreakAway for this professional development workshop. Service and community engagement programs are a popular form of collegiate student learning in the name of social justice and social change. However, research has shown the danger of traditional service work in reifying stereotypes, furthering deficit-based perspectives, and increasing the gap between volunteers and the communities they intend to serve. Through a critical approach to service-learning, we can mediate the unintended harms of service by adopting a social justice lens and unpacking systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice in our society and world. Join us to discuss models and strategies to further incorporate education and critical reflection into our service and social justice work. Hosted by Community Engagement.
