What Is a Body? Dancing Outside the Lines

What else might a body be capable of?
What happens when it moves beyond the forms it knows?

Dance Company Middlebury (DCM), directed by Visiting Assistant Professor Meshi Chavez with guest choreographer Jimmy Joyner, invites dancers into a pre-professional ensemble grounded in exploration, creation, and performance.

This season asks: What is a body? How do we show up, respond, and create within a world full of expectations and uncertainty? We work between structure and exploration, building, reshaping, and refining movement together.

Rehearsals are spaces to stretch, fold, shift, blur, and invent. Through movement, attention, and imagination, we explore how bodies connect, adapt, and reveal possibilities often hidden.

Winter Term 2027: Work in Atlanta with independent artists, opening and transforming material developed at Middlebury, then returning to refine and perform.

What Is a Body? Dancing Outside the Lines

The final performance reflects what emerges as we move beyond the lines we know, how bodies move, respond, and come into relation with each other, with space, and with materials. It reaches toward fleeting gestures, unexpected connections, and moments of shared discovery, perhaps toward hope.

A space to take risks. To notice. To feel. To move beyond what you know.
Step in. Move. Play. Create.
