Faculty at Home: Peter Hans Matthews and Andrea Robbett
–
Virtual MiddleburyPlease join Peter Hans Matthews, Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics and Andrea Robbett, Professor of Economics for a talk entitled “Selfishness and Self-Image in a Partisan World.”
Does selfishness change when we interact with those who either do, or do not, share our political views? And how important are image concerns, as opposed to altruism or other pro-social preferences, when deciding not to be selfish? In this brief talk, we share the results of a simple experiment designed to shed light on these and other questions, and perhaps spark some conversation on the eve of a momentous election.
Peter Hans Matthews is the Charles A. Dana Professor of Economics at Middlebury College and a visiting professor of economics at Aalto University and the Helsinki Graduate School of Economics.
Andrea Robbett is a behavioral and experimental economist whose research involves conducting laboratory and online experiments to test models of human behavior. Her work has addressed questions involving voting, cooperation in groups, information avoidance, affective polarization, social norms, labor economics, public economics, and financial decision making. She is the coauthor of Game Theory and Behavior and a forthcoming textbook on behavioral economics.
