Yasmine Nachabe Taan’s lecture will focus on the works of Abdulkader Arnaout (1936-1992), who is a Syrian modernist graphic designer and artist who is also renowned for his poetry, paintings, and typography. It will also focus on the works of Hilmi al-Tuni (1934) who is one of the Arab world’s most prominent illustrator and book designer. This talk will present the breadth and variety of both Arnaout and al-Tuni’s work and highlight Arnaout’s contribution to the development of a rich repertoire of Arabic typographic styles as well as a discussion of al-Tuni’s contribution to the development of a particular visual style reflective of an Egyptian popular culture. Both Arnaout and al-Tuni’s artwork had a great impact on the generation of artists and designers in Egypt, Syria and abroad.
