Translating Lost and Found: In 2016 Ishmael Houston-Jones, along with the choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and the composer Nick Hallett, created the New York Dance and Performance “Bessie Award” winning piece Variations On Themes from Lost and Found: Scenes from a Life and Other Works by John Bernd. John Bernd was an experimental choreographer/composer/visual artist active in the downtown New York performance scene of the 1980s who died in 1988 at age 35 from AIDS complications. Houston-Jones and his collaborators wove material from seven of Bernd’s pieces, created during the last six years of his life into a fresh and profoundly poignant work.
