The Rohatyn Center for Global Affair Program on Security and Global Affairs presents James Morrison and his talk on “The UK and the World from Brexit to Boris: Toward ‘Global Britain’ or Back to ‘Little England’?”

In a special, national referendum on the 23rd of June 2016, voters in the UK voted (narrowly) to “leave the European Union.” As she set the UK’s new course, Prime Minister Theresa May promised to “build a truly Global Britain…A great, global, trading nation. And one of the firmest advocates for free trade anywhere in the world.” In the years since, however, Theresa May’s high-minded ideals have given way to Boris Johnson’s boorish antics, Parliament has swallowed a humiliating exit agreement with the EU, and the UK has struggled just to maintain its existing trading arrangements beyond Europe, let alone advance new agreements. What really drove the movement for Brexit? Were the UK’s struggles since inevitable? What are the prospects for the UK in the years to come?

James Morrison is an assistant professor in the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He specializes in International Political Economy.

Prior to joining LSE, he was a member of Middlebury’s Political Science Department for five years, and a fellow at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University.
