The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Security and Global Affairs presents “The View from the Border: US Migration Policy and the Presidential Election” by Dr. Gabriella Sanchez.
Concerns over the state of the US Mexico border and urgent calls to “close the border” figure prominently in the current election. The arrival of record numbers of migrants generated a series of policies, which have furthered the humanitarian crisis on the border. Yet, there is limited discussion about the borderlands themselves: how border enforcement affects those who respond to the humanitarian crisis; how local communities cope, and how people on the move resist border security. This presentation examines the claims often articulated about the US Mexico borderlands and explores the possible humanitarian and migration policy under the forthcoming presidency.
Gabriella Sanchez, PhD, is research fellow at the Collaborative on Global Children’s Issues at Georgetown University.
