The RCGA program on Security and Global Affairs presents Todd Miller and his lecture “Violent Borders.”

One of the common narratives about state borders is that “strong borders” are necessary for national security. However, current approaches to border security and border hardening are relatively recent developments in international politics. Moreover, the measures taken to secure borders, including militarization and barrier construction, often produce violence and insecurity, rather than the inverse. In this talk, Todd Miller draws from his work around the world to discuss how the management of borders is tied to power, violence, and insecurity.

Todd Miller Todd Miller writes a weekly post for The Border Chronicle. He has researched and written about border issues for more than 15 years, the last eight as an independent journalist and writer. His work has appeared in the New York Times, TomDispatch, The Nation, San Francisco Chronicle, In These Times, Guernica, and Al Jazeera English, among others.
