Join facilitators from BreakAway for this professional development workshop. Service and community engagement programs are a popular form of collegiate student learning in the name of social justice and social change. However, research has shown the danger of traditional service work in reifying stereotypes, furthering deficit-based perspectives, and increasing the gap between volunteers and the communities they intend to serve.

Learn what you need to do to obtain a credit-bearing internship for January term.

Catharsis in Coltrane is a chance to express what we have not been able to in our discussions, in our Facebook posts, in our phone calls, in our intimate meetings. It is a chance for us to come together as a community and get out whatever is inside, channeling our creativity to bring it into the light. Thirty, 5 minute slots will be available in an open mic format. Anyone can sign up to share through poetry, music, art, dance, song, drama, or performance of any kind. It can be rehearsed or completely improvised in the moment. We only ask to refrain from editorializing.

Lunch will be provided during this informal meeting with three young alumni who work for economic consulting firm Charles River Associates (CRA). Dan Ladd ’14 majored in economics and geography and was a leader on the 2013 Solar Decathlon Team. Dan traveled around the world for his junior fall studying cities. Dan will be heading up the Competition and Anti-Trust recruiting for CRA next year. Max Friedman ’12 majored in math and minored in German and economics.
