Communicating Science to the Public

In The Narrow Edge, winner of the 2016 Academies of Science Best Book Award, and the Rachel Carson Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists, Deborah Cramer accompanies small sandpipers along their extraordinary migration from the tip of South America up into their Arctic nesting grounds, exploring how their lives are intertwined with ours.

Bio-Neuro Seminar: Dr. Annaleise Beery, Smith College: "Life in groups: the neurochemistry of sociality"

Sponsored by:
Biology
Seminar by Dr. Annaleise Beery, Associate Professor, Smith College, Psychology and Biology Departments; Neuroscience Program: Research in our lab relates to the neurobiology and evolution of mammalian social behavior, particularly social behaviors underlying life in groups. While the neural mechanisms underlying monogamy and parental behavior have been the focus of intense study, much less is known about the mechanisms supporting non-reproductive social behavior between peers.

Biology Seminar by Dr. Elizabeth Harper, '01: "Modeling the complex lives of pond-breeding amphibians"

Sponsored by:
Biology
Amphibians that breed in vernal pools and ponds have wildly fluctuating population sizes. My research has focused on understanding the drivers of these population changes, both natural and human caused. Using a combination of field, mesocosm, and laboratory experiments along with mathematical modeling approaches has allowed me to better understand the interacting effects of land-use practices, hydroperiod, density dependence and life history strategies on the dynamics of amphibian populations.

Biology Seminar: Dr. Cynthia Bearer, Professor of Neonatology, University of Maryland School of Medicine

Sponsored by:
Biology
“LIPID RAFT DYSFUNCTION: A possible mechanism for neurodevelopmental disorders”.

The development of the brain is a highly complex and coordinated process, requiring biological signaling amongst diverse molecules. Lipid rafts are an important membrane microdomain that coordinates this signaling. We have shown that common developmental neurotoxicants (ex. ethanol, toluene, bilirubin) disrupt protein-lipid raft signaling. Further, we have shown that choline may ameliorate these effects.

Lunch available at 12:15pm
