Dr. Richard Haass is president of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2013, he served as the chair of the multi-party negotiations in Northern Ireland that provided the foundation for the 2014 Stormont House Agreement. From January 2001 to June 2003, Dr. Haass was director of policy planning for the Department of State, where he was a principal adviser to Secretary of State Colin Powell. Survivors into Minorities: Armenians in Post-Genocide Turkey

This talk follows the trajectories of the survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide who remained inside Turkish borders after the signing of the 1918 Mudros Armistice (and during the Allied occupation years of Istanbul) and after the 1923 establishment of the new country as the Turkish Republic. How did the Kemalist state treat the remaining Armenians? What were Armenians’ responses to the new (but also old) Turkish regime?

Small Arms, Violence, and Global Development

Dr. Edward Laurance is Professor and Gordon Paul Smith Chair in International Policy and Development at MIIS. He currently serves as expert for a UN-led effort to develop global standards for controlling the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. The lecture will bring his policy expertise to our students and discuss a new international treaty on small arms that resulted from the extensive efforts of a global NGO campaign.
