The opportunities for employment in teaching English to speakers of other languages are often much more numerous and more rewarding (in several respects) in international contexts than here in the United States. MA TESOL holders have different prospects than the informal English teaching abroad offered for BA holders through programs like JET, ELIC or TAPIF. Yet accepting a formal position overseas requires more preparation, as candidates may be unfamiliar with the specifics of each context’s educational system and employment culture.
This talk introduces candidates for teaching abroad to the relative advantages and disadvantages of teaching in various regions and contexts, the kinds of preparation that may be most useful for working overseas, and some strategies for dealing with the challenges of different educational cultures. We will also pool our experiences and connections to make better-informed decisions about teaching abroad.
