A CASE-STUDY IN CONNOISSEURSHIP: GEORGE H. DURRIE, JAMES G. CLONNEY, AND FOUR AMERICAN GENRE PAINTINGS

James H. Maroney, Jr., a former American Art specialist at Sotheby’s New York, is the author of Fresh Perspectives on Grant Wood, Charles Sheeler, and George H. Durrie (2019) in which he makes the case for re-attributing four nineteenth-century genre paintings from George H. Durrie (American, 1820-1863) to James B. Clonney (English-born American, 1812-1867). In his lecture he will present arguments for this re-attribution based on stylistic, technical, and archival evidence, as well as on subject matter choices and historical contextualization.
