The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs presents “Giving Voice to the Voiceless? Contemporary Social Movements, Civil Society and Governments in Africa” by Edward McMahon visiting associate professor of political science, Middlebury College, and adjunct associate professor, Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, University of Vermont.
In recent years the internet and social media has provided marginalized sectors of society in many African countries a platform for heightened advocacy. But how effective has this been? How have these new movements related to existing civil society, and vice versa? And what has been the reaction of governments to these new methods of interest aggregation and articulation? What might this portend for the future?
Dr. McMahon has served as a consultant for numerous organizations working in the international development field, including the Carter Center, USAID, the UN Development Program, the World Bank, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems and a number of consulting firms. Much of this work has been in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. McMahon also has direct experience designing, implementing, and evaluating projects related to strengthening civil society, elections, and political party development.
