In the modern workplace, we often emphasize the importance of evidence-based decision making. As a global professional, you may be asked to collect, analyze, and present primary and secondary data to decision makers and influencers. It’s important to convey information in a manner that is easily understandable to your audience. Your data should tell a story that engages your audience and urges them to action. In this workshop, we will define what we mean by data visualization, look at examples of effective and less effective visualizations, and walk through some easy steps to create your own.

Dr. Lubomir Sklenka will have open office hours for students to drop by and talk about the Nuclear Research Reactor course taking place in Prague and Vienna in January 2024.

Dr. Bryan Betancur, Associate Professor of Spanish at CUNY Bronx Community College will present “Latino/a, Latinx, Latine, or Other? Gender-Inclusive Language and Ethnic Identity.” in the Irvine Auditorium.

The Language Studies Department invites you to celebrate the International Day of Peace with us on Thursday, September 21 at the Samson Patio from 10am-12pm. This event will include short speeches and reflections on peace in multiple languages. Cohorts from Arabic, French, English, Japanese, and Spanish will be presenting in their target languages. The event is open to the campus at large and we welcome all students to share how to say “peace” in their native languages. The UN theme for this internationally recognized day is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambitions for the #Global Goals.”

Former MIIS staff member and TESOL alumna Therese Tishakov (MATESOL 2004) will present her PhD research on “Multilingualism in the classroom: Language teachers’ beliefs and practices”. All are invited! Bring your own brown-bag lunch! (Zoom link provided on MiCommunity)
