How is microbial ecology linked to human health? Why does the same perturbation to the microbiome lead to different outcomes in different individuals? Explore a recent finding demonstrating that the abundance and phylogeny of microbial enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism correlates with drug metabolism phenotypes (‘metabotypes’) in the human gut.

The microbes that live in our body influence human health. My lab studies how differences in the microbial communities between individuals can affect how we process food and how we respond to drugs. We ask why the same perturbation to the microbiome, for example, exposure to a drug or an inflammatory condition, can lead to different outcomes in different individuals.
Dr. Kelly is with the Departments of Systems & Computational Biology and Microbiology & Immunology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Biology Seminar by Dr. Elizabeth Harper, '01: "Modeling the complex lives of pond-breeding amphibians"

Amphibians that breed in vernal pools and ponds have wildly fluctuating population sizes. My research has focused on understanding the drivers of these population changes, both natural and human caused. Using a combination of field, mesocosm, and laboratory experiments along with mathematical modeling approaches has allowed me to better understand the interacting effects of land-use practices, hydroperiod, density dependence and life history strategies on the dynamics of amphibian populations.

“LIPID RAFT DYSFUNCTION: A possible mechanism for neurodevelopmental disorders”.

The development of the brain is a highly complex and coordinated process, requiring biological signaling amongst diverse molecules. Lipid rafts are an important membrane microdomain that coordinates this signaling. We have shown that common developmental neurotoxicants (ex. ethanol, toluene, bilirubin) disrupt protein-lipid raft signaling. Further, we have shown that choline may ameliorate these effects.
