Your Path to Getting Published

George Thompson’s Publisher-in-Residence program returns to help faculty take their first steps toward a productive summer. On Wed, 5/13 there will be a lunchtime presentation about the current publishing climate and the best steps to take in contacting and working with publishers, presses, and journals. Individual consultations will also be available about publishing scholarly and creative works in a variety of formats on Wed, 5/13 and Thu, 5/14. This is a great opportunity for all, but especially for junior faculty.

Samara Gordon Wexler ‘23.5, Watson Fellow, “What does it mean to die well?”

What does it mean to die well? Samara Gordon Wexler ’23.5 will speak about her year-long Watson Fellowship project exploring what this means across different cultures and healthcare systems. Samara traveled to the UK, Ghana, South Africa, India, New Zealand, and Ireland, working alongside death doulas, fantasy coffin makers, and medical teams serving remote villages in order to understand how communities support end of life care. Registration is appreciated.

Spring Student Symposium 2026

The Spring Student Symposium is an all-campus event that provides students an opportunity to showcase their academic projects to a campus-wide audience in a professional conference setting. Since 2007, the event has showcased the academic and creative works of students. In addition to presenting, students enjoy attending to support their friends, explore a major, or learn more about undergraduate research topics here at Middlebury.

Writing Effective Letters of Recommendation

Join Hannah Benz, Mary Lothrop, and Lisa Gates for a conversation about writing letters of recommendation for different purposes: fellowships, medical school, summer research, and graduate programs. What makes recommendations most effective? How can you tailor letters for different purposes? We will discuss the style, content, and purpose of different letters, point out potential pitfalls and possible remedies, and analyze examples.

When Cheating Rears Its Ugly Head: How to Talk with Students about Honor Code Violations

What should we do when we strongly suspect a student of having broken the honor code? What are the best practices for approaching students in such cases? How can we build trust and a spirit of academic integrity, especially when generative A.I. now makes cheating so easy and so tempting? Join us for a discussion organized by the Academic Integrity Committee with faculty and students who have been through the judicial process and come out the other side intact.

UK Fellowships Info Session (2/19)

Have you considered applying to graduate school in the UK? Join Dean Lisa Gates for an overview of UK fellowships, what makes an ideal candidate, and a review of the nomination and application process. Registration appreciated.
