Dr. Dusica Bajic, MD, PhD: Pain, Analgesia, Research, and More

Abstract: Opioids, including morphine, relieve acute pain and have become the golden standard for pain treatment even for the youngest of patients. However, chronic administration of morphine is associated with negative behavioral effects that, in part, include antinociceptive tolerance, opioid dependence, and addiction. About 37-50% of infants in ICU’s across the nation develop dependence on the medication, and have to be weaned off following treatment.
