Visit from Algorithmic Visual Artist James Merrill

James Merrill is an algorithmic visual artist who resides in Vermont, USA. He creates computational artwork, combining generative system design, mathematics, randomness, and data to create infinitely unique systems. A third-generation artist, James has been creating digital artworks for over 25 years. His work seeks to utilize technology to challenge assumptions about the nature of traditional art. What often starts as a program ends as a physical artwork, drawn to extreme detail by robotic systems.

Dr. Margaret Eppstein Professor and Chair of Computer Science, University of Vermont The fitness-landscape analogy has influenced the way scientists think about evolution for nearly a century. ‘Deception’ was coined in the evolutionary computation literature to describe landscapes in which sign epistasis can mislead a genetic algorithm away from the global optimum. However, current definitions of ruggedness and deception only capture intrinsic properties of landscapes.

Hany Farid ~ Professor of Computer Science ~ Dartmouth College From the tabloid magazines to main-stream media outlets, political campaigns, courtrooms, and the photo hoaxes that land in our email, doctored photographs are appearing with a growing frequency and sophistication. The resulting lack of trust is impacting law enforcement, national security, the media, e-commerce, and more. The field of photo forensics has emerged to help return some trust in photography. Most forms of photo manipulation will disturb some statistical, geometric, or physical property of an image.
