Presented in conjunction with the 2015 Clifford Symposium, The “good” Body. Free Taking inspiration from both the recent onslaught of racialized violence and the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, this three-day academic symposium interrogates the ideas of assumption, access, and accountability through the lens of artistic engagement, dialogic process, and self-study. Participants are invited to reflect on the ways in which body politics have played out in their lives on and off the campus of Middlebury College.

Anatoly Smeliansky, Associate Artistic Director of the Moscow Arts Theatre and Director of the Moscow Arts Theatre School, will discuss the history and evolution of what is arguably the most famous theatre company in the world.

In this lecture presentation, Sophie Bufton ‘15.5 presents her independent research in dance history with an investigation of early German ausdruckstanz philosophy, with a focus on the works and influence of Mary Wigman, and how images and notions of “the ideal body” existed or were challenged during the interregnum period in Europe.
