Join Sal Nakhlawi ’19 for a 45-minute online fitness class to build strength and practice introspection. The class will incorporate movements that you can complete with your own bodyweight or dumbbells (or household items). All fitness levels are welcome.

Equipment you’ll need for the class:
• Your own bodyweight OR dumbbells (or something to lift)
• Paper and pen / digital device for notes
• Yoga mat and/or towel (optional)

Students Alex Bacchus ’21 and Christian Kummer ’22 will talk about their summer internships. Alex received a Fulbright-Hays scholarship scholarship to study Persian in Tajikistan, Alex worked at the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York. A free sushi lunch will be served.

What happens when we come to know things about our research subjects that defy common citational practices. In this “Life of the Mind” talk, Lana Povitz (History Dept.) will discuss “deep acquaintance,” or the social insight that accumulates outside of and around formal research on living people. Drawing on recent experiences with oral history, Povitz asks: what role can social curiosity play in serious scholarship? How do the relationships we forge with our subjects shape the work we produce? Is this consciously relational approach to research feminist? Is it queer?

Continuing Chellis House’s exploration of the suffrage centennial, Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will talk about two 19th century activists who ran for president even though women had not achieved the right to vote: Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to set up a brokerage firm, declared her candidacy for President of the United States in 1872 and chose Frederick Douglass as her running mate. While Woodhull never carried out a presidential campaign, Belva Lockwood did in 1884. One of the first female lawyers in the U.S., Lockwood was nominated by the Equal Rights Party.
