The 90-voice chorus welcomes spring with its popular spring concert including a delightful mix of choral works from times past and present. With a history that dates back more than 150 years, the chorus brings singers together from on and off campus to present this joyful performance. Hamilton Pinheiro, an acclaimed bassist and music producer from Brasilia, will offer a lecture/demonstration on a variety of Brazilian genres in jazz. Focusing on the samba and bossa nova, the session will also include genres less common to American jazz musicians, including Choro, Baião, Partido Alto and Ijexá. Presenting Medieval and New Melodies

At the intersection of music theory, composition, and performance, Annie Beliveau ’18 will give a lecture-recital of her senior work based on research into Sarum plainchant from her year abroad in Oxford. With student collaborators, Annie will present her research results and a suite of original compositions inspired by medieval musical processes and modern poetry about the natural world.

All are welcome at this event which seeks to make this 500-year-old music accessible! Free.

Middlebury African Music and Dance Ensemble

The music of this student ensemble demonstrates the study of many musical Africanisms: complex polyphony, musical conversation, structured improvisation, recurrent patterns, layered ostinati, timbral variety, and tonal variations. These stylistic elements serve as markers of cultural, social, political, and religious lifeways in Africa. Free
