SLMDances is a New York City based dance-theater collective that works in communities to organize for gender and racial justice. In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr, SLMDances’ creative partners and artistic director Sydnie Mosley will offer a three-hour workshop open to students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Coalition Building and Collaboration:

This workshop explores how our upbringings have shaped our definition of productivity and how that manifests within our everyday lives. We will also explore the origins of hustle culture and how we can move away from it. 

This workshop explores the expansiveness of gender while aiming to address its limitations. In this, we will try to challenge our own understanding of gender through discussing how/why it was constructed, how this impacts social norms now, and where we go from here.

This workshop is geared towards BIPOC students on ways to equip and prepare them academically and socially at a predominantly white institution (PWI). 

Images of bucolic landscapes, covered bridges, neat farms, and tightly knit communities are central to popular conceptions of Vermont. These same impressions, however, have rendered much of the region’s historical violence invisible. Local historian Ethan Mitchell will present new research uncovering murders of Chinese immigrants on human smuggling routes through Vermont and upstate New York in the early 20th century.

This workshop explores the different power dynamics present in the workplace and how to navigate starting, engaging in, or protecting oneself when difficult, controversial, or risky conversations take place. We will primarily be focusing on race, racism, and white supremacy.

This workshop explores what accountable communication looks like and barriers we face when communicating.
