Spencer Prize in Oratory for First Year Students

The Spencer Prize 2018 continues with Act 2: the Atwater Commons Championships, on Sunday, Jan 21 at 8pm in the Allen Lounge. First-Year speakers from Atwater will share what they’ve learned in class at Midd, and why they care so much about it, for a right to compete in the Finals in February. Financial Wellness-the essentials for a prosperous financial future

This session is designed for juniors and seniors as they prepare for what’s next. Over 90-minutes, Kevin Ostergaard, CFP®, will provide a high-level view into basic budgeting principles, cash flow management, retirement planning, taxes, debt management, personal investing, and more. Spaces will be limited to 45 students, and sign-ups will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

To honor the late Professor Emeritus John Spencer, Oratory Now announces the third annual speech competition for first-year students. Faculty-nominated speakers from Wonnacott Commons will each have 3 minutes to respond to the following prompt: “Connect something you learned in a Middlebury class to something you care about. Can you get your Commons to care too?”

The winner will face off against four other Commons Champions on February 18 at the Grand Championship, in the Mahaney Center Robison Hall. The 2020 Spencer Prize winner will receive a $500 cash prize.
