Maine GearShare is a nonprofit startup that helps communities borrow and fix outdoor gear instead of buying it - lowering costs, reducing waste, and opening up opportunities for more people to enjoy the natural world.

After a successful gear repair pop-up last fall, we are excited to bring MGS back to campus, this time with an added day of DIY repair workshops and a Founder’s story dinner!

Schedule of events:

Thursday, Oct 23

3–6 PM: DIY Repair Workshops, Axinn Center Lobby

Learn practical repair skills with Maine GearShare’s DIY workshops and discover how to extend the life of your outdoor gear. No prior experience is required; just bring an interest in learning how to keep your gear in use for years to come.

Workshops will include:

  • Introduction to machine sewing
  • Using hand tools: seam rippers, patch kits, needles
  • Zipper and buckle fixes
  • Making a starter field repair kit

6:30–7:30 PM: Founders’ Story & Dinner (RSVP here!) Abernethy Room, Axinn Center

Join Josh Bossin, Maine GearShare’s founder, for an evening conversation about building a nonprofit that helps communities borrow and repair outdoor gear. They will share insights on repair culture, sustainability, and the journey of starting an organization dedicated to accessible outdoor recreation. Dinner and discussion will be provided, with free pizza for attendees. Please RSVP to reserve a seat.

Friday, Oct 24

10 AM–3 PM: Free Gear Repair Session, Gifford Lawn

Bring damaged jackets, bags, or other outdoor gear to Gifford Lawn for free professional repairs from Maine GearShare. Attendees can observe the repair process, learn which fixes are most effective, and connect with student groups focused on outdoor access and sustainability. This event is open to everyone and encourages reducing waste through reuse and repair.
