The General Counsel provides legal services and advice to all Middlebury schools and programs and is responsible for supervising all outside counsel providing services to Middlebury. In some instances, either special expertise is necessary or timing dictates that outside legal counsel be engaged. The General Counsel’s supervision of outside counsel is required, regardless of the source of funding, and the General Counsel reviews all invoices for legal services.
The General Counsel requires that outside counsel submit monthly bills for their services directly to the OGC for approval for payment, where they will be reviewed to make sure that appropriate caps or not-to-exceed amounts are adhered to, and hourly rates are accurate, including any negotiated discount or alternative fee arrangement. If the General Counsel needs additional information about a particular engagement, the program may be contacted to answer a question or review the invoice. Any discrepancies or issues identified should be brought to the attention of the OGC.
