We write following today’s announcement with additional information about completing your degree at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. To reiterate President Ian Baucom’s pledge, we are committed to supporting all students in completing their degrees on time.The Institute will continue to operate its programs and services through the conclusion of the Spring 2027 semester.

We have posted a set of frequently asked questions along with the announcement and will update it as needed in the coming days. We encourage you to review it regularly. 

Upcoming Informational Meetings 
We understand that you will have questions and concerns and have scheduled the following opportunities for you to pose them. 

  • There will be a group informational meeting for students with Vice President of Student Financial Services and Enrollment Kim Downs-Burns and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Derek Doucet on Friday, August 30, at 11 a.m. PST in Irvine Auditorium. Kim and Derek will offer the same session on Tuesday, September 2, at 9 A.M. for students unable to attend the August 30 meeting. 
  • Kim and Derek will offer 30-minute individual informational meetings on the afternoon of Friday, August 29; Monday, September 1; and Tuesday, September 2; in the Student Services Conference Room in McCone. A zoom option will also be available for those who need or prefer to meet virtually. 
  • Open drop-in info sessions via Zoom will be offered on September 4, September 11 and September 15 at noon PST. While general questions are welcomed at any session, each session will also feature a guest representative from a particular office (Student Financial Services, International Student and Scholar Services, Office of the Registrar, etc.) to answer more specialized questions. A detailed schedule of these sessions will follow in a subsequent message. 

Important Dates

  • August 29:
  • Group informational meeting for students already on campus with Vice President of Student Financial Services and Enrollment Kim Downs-Burns and Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Derek Doucet at 11 a.m. in Irvine Auditorium.
  • Schedule 15-minute individual informational meetings with Kim and Derek between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Student Services Conference Room in McCone. 
  • September 1–2: Schedule 15-minute individual informational meetingswith Kim and Derek from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Services Conference Room in McCone. Note that while September 1 is a holiday, Kim and Derek will be holding these sessions for students with questions. 
  • September 2: Student information meeting with Kim and Derek for returning students unable to attend the Friday session from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. PST in Irvine Auditorium. 
  • September 4, 11 and 15: Drop-in Zoom informational sessions with Derek and other student services leaders.
  • September 15: Withdrawal / Refund Deadline at 11:59 p.m.

In addition to these opportunities for discussion and consultation over the next few days and weeks, outreach will continue through the fall semester in various forms.

While we know this is difficult news to receive, we are here to ensure that you have the same high quality academic experience generations of MIIS students before you have had. Your time at the Institute will remain rigorous and rewarding and include full access to all the resources Middlebury can offer. We know the positive impact you will have in your professions and the world and are ready to help prepare for that inspiring work.
