Dear Bread Loafer,

Below you’ll see directions on how to upload your manuscript for workshop critique. We would like all participants to send a manuscript, even those who would like to use the same material that they uploaded with their application. Please plan to send your manuscript so we receive it by Thursday, June 1 (any time that day or evening is fine).

Directions—how to upload the manuscript:

  1. The manuscript guidelines are the same that you followed during the application process; please submit up to 6,000 words of prose or ten pages of poetry.  See the guidelines below.
  2. Save your manuscript as a Word document (a Word document allows writers to give feedback in the document itself, if they wish).
  3. Use your name and workshop genre for the title of the manuscript document—note your last name followed by your first name (for example: YourLastName_YourFirstName_nonfiction manuscript.doc).
  4. Upload your manuscript here.

Thank you very much for following these directions. If you think of any questions regarding this process or anything else as you prepare for your workshop, please let us know. We’re looking forward to staying in touch over the upcoming months and to seeing you this summer!

Manuscript Guidelines

Writers should submit a manuscript of current work up to 6,000 words of fiction or nonfiction, or up to ten pages of poetry for workshop critique.

  • The applicant’s name and a page number must appear on each sheet of the manuscript. (For example: YourLastName, p.1.)

  • Prose manuscripts must be double-spaced with 12 pt. font and margins of at least 1.25”. The total word count should be noted at the top of the first page. Writers may include one or more stories as long as the total number of pages is within the 6,000-word limit. Please include a short note to let readers know if the piece is a short story, an excerpt from a novel or nonfiction. Manuscripts excerpted from a longer project should include a one-page synopsis placed at the back of the piece.

  • Poetry manuscripts should have 12 pt. font and can be single-spaced or double-spaced. A poem can exceed one page, as long as the complete manuscript submission is within the ten-page limit. Please do not squeeze more than one poem to a page.

  • Please do not send children’s or young adult literature, coauthored work, or self-help literature.
