Martha Siegfried Fritz, educational steward, champion of the arts, devoted friend of Middlebury College. You have dedicated your adult life to supporting education and the arts, and we are truly fortunate that you have channeled such energy and purpose to the benefit of this institution.

As a former elementary school teacher, you well understand the power of curiosity to fuel creativity. You have not only embraced that belief, but have instilled it in all those around you—from the students you taught to the patrons you encountered as a senior associate at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts to the board members you currently work with at museums and institutions here in Vermont and in the greater Boston area.

At Middlebury, your allegiance is without question and can be found in your service on the College’s Arts Council, your generous philanthropic support, and your infectious enthusiasm that you bring to sporting and cultural events, and to the innovative South Street Seminar program. Yet perhaps the soundest indicator of your belief in our mission can be found in your children, three boys, all of whom you entrusted to this College on a hill.

It is therefore my privilege, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees of Middlebury College, to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights, honors, privileges, and responsibilities here and everywhere appertaining to this degree.
