Sarah Bright Alturki

Sarah Bright Alturki, philanthropist, champion of women, renowned reformer of education in the Middle East.

For the past 40 years, you have worked tirelessly to advance the cause of education in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Arab world. With your husband, Khalid Alturki, you founded the Dhahran Ahliyya Schools with the mission of preparing boys and girls to be thinkers, explorers, and change-makers, and you have pioneered new educational opportunities for children in the Middle East. As the deputy president and head of the girls’ section, you serve as a role model for all your students, but particularly for the young women, who see in you what is possible for them.

A few years ago, you spoke at an International Women’s Day celebration in Bahrain, where you encouraged students at the Royal University for Women to “develop an image in your mind of what you want to accomplish, get clear, focus, and never let go.” It is this mindset that is leading to profound and sustainable changes in education and for women in the Arab world.

It is therefore my privilege, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees of Middlebury College, to confer upon you the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, with all the rights, honors, privileges, and responsibilities here and everywhere appertaining to this degree.
