Primary Purpose

Responsible for leading and participating in the selection, implementation, appropriate use and on-going support of network security and network-level administration of all network aware devices on campus.



Responsibilities (Security)
*Combined with efforts from the Senior Network Architect, Director of Central Systems and Network Services and Systems Administrators, the Network Security Administrator is responsible for hardware, software, processes and procedures relating to network and system security

*Configures, manages, monitors and maintains firewall and IDS/IPS related systems as well as future security technologies as appropriate

*Acts as one of the primary points of contact for all computer security related incidents

*Evaluates and recommends appropriate network security policies. Works with LIS management to promote and enforce these policies

*Works with other LIS technical staff to research and manage virus and malware prevention systems

*Suggests and participates in the implementation of products, technologies and techniques to secure campus computing systems

*Monitors and audits all aspects of network and system security. Provides reports of system security status to LIS management for audit purposes

*Stays current and researches/reviews/responds to new security threats including viruses, Trojan horses, rootkits and product/OS exploits the College could be vulnerable to.  Stays current with new security techniques including security tools, techniques and network scanners.

*Implements and maintains protective measures on end-user systems that LIS maintains direct control over.  Implements and maintains passive security and remediation systems (i.e. Campus Manager) for all other users.

*Implements and maintains security on Wireless Network, minimizing security threats from non-College-related persons.

*Writes custom tools to monitor and scan network devices relating to security and remote network access, including VPN.


Responsibilities (General)

*Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

*Perform configuration of all types of Cisco, Juniper and Aruba networking equipment.

*Maintains a strong working knowledge of Windows Active Directory security

*Provide third level support to Help Desk personnel

*Provide supervision to any LIS Graduate Interns assigned to Central Systems and Network Services Area.

*Participate in general network administration in a multiplatform environment including, but not limited to, user & group management, network file shares, patch management, service/support pack management, DHCP, DNS, and Active Directory and other technologies for on-line user collaboration.

Education & Training

Bachelor's degree required; Master's and recent training/certification in Information Technology is preferred.


Minimum 2 years experience in Network Security and 5 years experience in Network and Systems Administration. Demonstrated experience in learning and applying contemporary security techniques.


Knowledge of systems management, systems engineering, network engineering, network security, network penetration testing and systems administration required.  Must have strong working knowledge of database driven applications and scripting languages including PHP, Perl, Python and VBScript.  Must have strong working knowledge of database platforms, including MySQL, PostreSQL and MSSQL.


Must have logical, analytical and problem-solving skills. Must have good interpersonal communication skills.
