Summer Employment
Please remember that summer work is processed separately from academic year and student employees must be processed via Workable or the rehire process regardless of whether the employment is a continuation from the academic year or new, and must be completed with a confirmation from Human Resources before the student works in their summer position.
Eligibility
All actively enrolled students for the semester are eligible for on-campus jobs, unless restricted by visa status.
- Remote work from international locations is not permitted.
- Students who are on leave or withdrawn are not eligible for student employment, including summer positions.
- Students on leave or withdrawn can be hired into temporary staff positions, not student employment roles, if available.
On Campus Work
Students may work in person and on campus during the summer.
Housing and dining plans are optional and available on a limited basis with more information available from Residential Life and Dining Services.
Remote Work
Students can only work remotely if physically located within the United States.
International remote work is not allowed. Faculty interested in hiring Research Assistants located outside the U.S. should contact Undergraduate Research to explore non-employment options.
Remote positions must meet the following conditions:
- Employee must be located within the United States.
- All duties and responsibilities must be achievable by remote work.
- Total combined work hours (across all positions) may not exceed 40 hours per week during the summer.
Campus Housing and Dining Information
Students seeking summer housing must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible, which may include a combination of remote and on-campus hours.
All summer hires requesting campus housing must be processed by the predetermined housing deadline (2026 date TBD).
- Students must either be submitted through the Student Rehire process or listed in Workable under “Student Hired” with a future Monday start date.
- Students who do not request housing may continue to be hired after the deadline.
Details on Summer 2026 housing and dining plans, including rates, will be announced by Residential Life in the spring. For updates, visit the Residential Life website.
Steps to Hire for Supervisors
Supervisors should review information about Supervising Summer Employees, which includes processing requirements for summer employment.
All students hired to work between Commencement and the first day of fall classes must:
- Apply via Workable or be processed through the Student Rehire system to confirm their hire.
- Be registered for the Fall term (for non–Summer Research Assistant positions).
- Have hiring data submitted by the spring deadline (date to be announced).
Recent graduates are not eligible for undergraduate student employment. They should visit the Middlebury College Careers page for available staff roles if they are interested in continuing to be employed with the college.
Students will receive a confirmation email from HR with their approved summer employment dates.
Fall Early Return Students
The deadline for completing student rehires or new hires for early return in Fall 2026 is TBD. This deadline ensures coordination between Human Resources, Residential Life, and Facilities for employment records and housing assignments.
Find a Summer Job
Visit the Middlebury College Careers page to search for on campus summer opportunities. For new hires, an application is required in order for the Supervisor to submit the required hire data. If you are currently in a position that will be rolling over to summer, please confirm your intent and start date with your Supervisor. They will provide HR with the rehire information.
Summer Research
Faculty members with approved mentored faculty-student research positions must complete a Summer Research Assistant (SRA) form. This form confirms that the research meets the criteria outlined in the Policies and Procedures for Summer Research Assistants. The form deadline for summer research assistants is TBD for 2026. Please reach out to Undergraduate Research for more information.
