Graduate Internship Training Program

The Graduate Training Program internship provides opportunities for graduate students in counseling based programs (e.g. psychology, social work, etc.) to develop their clinical counseling skills in a college counseling setting. Graduate interns will have the opportunity to integrate their knowledge and counseling skills into work with Middlebury College students under careful supervision provided by the combined efforts of on-site supervisors and graduate program faculty. To this end, supervisors typically find themselves teaching, modeling, consulting, and even co-counseling with interns.

Middlebury College Counseling interns will:

  • Meet with students for one-on-one counseling sessions and build a robust caseload.
  • Run groups on campus (optional).
  • Conduct crisis intervention.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources.
  • Participate in meetings and case consultations with other clinicians and staff.
  • Have the opportunity to attend professional development trainings.

Through direct experience and close supervision, interns will:

  • Develop clinical counseling skills and integrate counseling theory.
  • Learn how to integrate social justice oriented practices in their work with students and learn more about the role of power and oppression on a college campus.
  • Learn more about human development specific to the college population.
  • Learn how to identify an individual’s challenges and cater interventions accordingly.
  • Learn to identify and address ethical concerns.
  • Learn about social and family systems and how they impact a student.
  • Learn more about the role of counseling within higher education institutions as a whole.
  • Experience what it’s like to be a professional counselor.
