Internships enable students to explore career options, pursue academic interests or personal passions, and acquire practical work experience before they start looking for a job.

Internships also make them more competitive applicants for employment. Research conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) showed that 61 percent of students who had an internship also had a job offer in hand when they graduated in 2011.
The College is working with alumni and parents to expand the network of businesses and organizations that welcome internship applications from Middlebury students. Many businesses provide a modest salary to help interns with living expenses, but nonprofit organizations generally do not. (More than 60 percent of the internships held by Middlebury students during the summer of 2010 were unpaid.)
Many students cannot afford to forego a paying summer job in favor of an unpaid internship. The Center for Careers and Internships has some gift funds to support unpaid summer internship opportunities but currently can fund fewer than half of the students who apply for funds. This past summer, 90 students received funding for unpaid internships.
