Announcements, News

The following message was sent to the Middlebury campus community on Monday, April 10.

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Last night, Middlebury Police, State Police, and the Department of Public Safety responded to what was later determined to be an unfounded report of an active shooter on campus at the Davis Family Library. This prompted a set of all-campus emergency alert messages and a shelter-in-place order. While investigators found no credible threats, any situation like this–founded or not–is unexpected and upsetting, especially to those who were present when police arrived.

We want to thank emergency responders for their actions at the scene and for doing everything they could to inform and instruct our community as soon as possible. We also thank those of you who reached out to us expressing concern.

While we are not canceling any college-related activities, including classes today, we ask that faculty and staff accommodate students who choose not to attend class or other scheduled events. All of us understand that we need to process events in our own way. We also realize that continuing routine and being together is important during a time like this, and routine can provide space for those who would like to talk about these difficult events together.
