Announcements

Dear Campus Community,

We are writing to update you regarding flooding conditions that have occurred on campus and throughout the Middlebury area following last night’s flash flooding.

This morning, our Facilities crews are doing some minor clean-up on buildings that have been impacted by the water, and our assessment is ongoing. Off-campus buildings at Exchange Street and Marble Works are near impacted roads and colleagues with offices in these buildings should use caution.

As of 6 a.m., the Middlebury Highway Department issued a notice of the following road closures:

  • Painter Road
  • Three Mile Bridge Road
  • Blake Roy Road
  • Shard Villa Road
  • Exchange Street (in the area near Agri-Mark)

We encourage you to check for road closure updates on the Town of Middlebury website here. Notifications of emergency situations at specific locations throughout the State of Vermont can also be received by registering with the Vermont Alert program. Another helpful resource for travelers is NewEngland511.org.

Our primary concern at this point is that more rain is expected. The National Weather Service is predicting another round of heavy thunderstorms today, producing half an inch to an inch of additional rain locally, with two inches possible across Essex County, New York, and south-central to northern Vermont. Rainfall may exceed locally an inch per hour in heaviest storms, which could result in flash flooding, especially in areas that have recently received rainfall. A flood watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

We ask that you use your best judgment regarding travel today.
