MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Ted Grace ’18 stepped away from his biochemistry and molecular biology studies this J-term to focus on adventure writing. Grace, a biathlete, took the popular course with adventure writer Peter Lourie, who has taught the course for several years. Grace says the class gave him the opportunity to document in creative nonfiction his passion for biathlon, the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting.

In a short video, Grace explains what draws him to the rigorous sport and how the craft of adventure writing has changed how he thinks about the activity he loves.

“Adventure writing, for me, seemed to combine a chance to go outside with with something more introspective,” says Grace. “I thought it would be a focused way for me to refine an interest and an adventure, but with an academic component to it.”
