Faculty and Staff Authors Recognized at Reception

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Faculty and staff authors of 26 books were honored at an annual reception hosted by the College’s Special Collections and Archives on April 28. The celebration recognized works completed in 2015.

“The work that you are doing, and fellow authors across the country and the world, is of vital importance,” said Jim Ralph, professor of history and dean of faculty development. “It is with a sense of gratitude and with a spirit of celebration that we recognize your achievements.”

The faculty and staff authors in attendance each offered a few words about their books. An eclectic mix of titles reflected the broad range of academic disciplines represented in the room. Associate Professor of Anthropology James Fitzsimmons introduced his book, Living with the Dead: Mortuary Ritual in the Andes, while Pardon Tillinghast Prof of Religion and Director of the Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life Larry Yarbrough described his latest work, Engaging the Passion: Perspectives on the Death of Jesus.

Ralph also relayed greetings from President Laurie Patton–herself recognized for her book, Dialogue in Early South Asian Religions: Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain Traditions–who was unable to attend due to previous travel commitments.

“The 23 authors and the 26 volumes we celebrate are evidence of intellectual vibrancy of the Middlebury community,” wrote Patton in her remarks. “They are joining the collection in my office that I began last summer and continue to add to, as faculty and staff bring me their books, articles, and other creative expressions. I’m lining my office shelves with your work as a daily physical reminder of creativity, and I smile with pride and delight when I see that collection growing.”
