Marty New visits with friends at a retirement celebration on March 1 at Davis Family Library. New is retiring after 47 years at Middlebury College.

On Thursday, March 1, Middlebury celebrated the long career of Marty New, who is retiring after 47 years on the staff of Middlebury College. She will be fondly remembered by many faculty and staff as the calm and patient voice of assistance in resolving computer issues over the phone through the College’s Helpdesk.

New began at Middlebury in January of 1971 as a temporary secretary. She became a full-time secretary in the gift processing department less than a month later.

By the end of the 1970’s, New was promoted to database coordinator in the Data Processing Department. In 1992 her position was upgraded to Database Specialist and in 1995 she was upgraded again to security administrator/database specialist.

New’s responsibilities in this role increased greatly from 1995 to 2001, when she was promoted to computing services specialist, User Services, as the Administrative Information System department became Information Technology Services. In 2007 her position was changed to computing specialist 1, her current position at Middlebury.
