MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Alexander Handwerger, research scholar in geology, and colleagues from North Carolina State University and Northwestern University have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s PREEVENTS program (Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme Events) for a project titled “Defining precursors of ground failure: a multiscale framework for early landslide prediction through geomechanics and remote sensing.”

The four-year project has a goal of identifying landslide precursors in order to improve our ability to forecast landslides and mitigate hazards. Middlebury’s budget provides funding for research time, involvement of at least four undergraduate students, and travel.
